Intervention description

This is a single-arm pilot implementation study comprising two sequential intervention components.

Component 1 – Digital mentor training

Approximately 30–35 digital mentors will be recruited through partner organisations. Following informed consent, mentors will complete a baseline questionnaire. Mentors will then participate in a structured face-to-face training program delivered by YourLink, an Australian organisation with expertise in digital literacy training for older adults.

Training will be delivered in person at Macquarie University, in small groups of approximately 5–10 mentors, comprising approximately 8 hours over two half-day sessions. The training will cover digital literacy, online safety and cybersecurity, accessibility features, communication strategies, and practical approaches to supporting older adults with hearing and/or vision loss. Mentors will receive a handbook and program resources to support program delivery.

The guides and program resources are based on existing resources developed by YourLink and adapted for use in this study, as well as new content developed specifically for the study based on the DigiComp framework. For more complicated or sensitive topics, we have sourced existing generic resources from subject matter experts such as the Be Connected Network for Online Banking and the Australian Government for MyGov.

Training attendance will be recorded by the project coordinator, and completion of both training sessions will be used to assess adherence to the mentor training.

Following training, mentors will complete a post-training questionnaire assessing training acceptability, perceived usefulness, confidence, preparedness, and readiness to support older adults with sensory loss. Mentors who successfully complete the training will then deliver the digital literacy program to older adult participants through individual, face-to-face mentoring sessions of approximately one hour per week for 6–8 weeks.

Following program delivery, mentors will complete a post-delivery questionnaire evaluating their mentoring experience, program feasibility and acceptability, implementation challenges, support needs, and overall satisfaction. Mentor participation, program delivery, and survey completion will also be monitored as part of the implementation evaluation.

Component 2 – Mentor-delivered digital literacy program

Approximately 75 community-dwelling older adults aged 60 years or older with hearing loss, vision loss, or dual sensory loss will receive tailored one-to-one digital literacy support from trained digital mentors. Following informed consent, participants will complete a baseline assessment before commencing the program.

The intervention will consist of approximately one-hour, face-to-face mentoring sessions delivered weekly over 6–8 weeks. Sessions will be delivered in participants' homes, community venues, university campuses, or partner organisation facilities, depending on participant preference and local arrangements. Program content will be individualised according to each participant's learning goals, accessibility requirements, device type, existing digital skills, and preferred learning pace.

The guides and program focus on smartphones, tablets and app based smart devices. The devices will be the existing devices that participants already have. Broad digital topics such as communication and online safety will benefit participants using all technology, including laptops and computers as well as using everyday technology participants may come across in the broad community. Devices will not be provided by the researchers.

Topics may include device operation, accessibility features for hearing and vision loss, digital communication, internet searching, online safety and privacy, access to government and health services, online banking, shopping, transport, social media, artificial intelligence tools, and other everyday digital tasks. Participants will also receive a tailored printed and/or electronic handbook to support learning during and after the program.

Adherence and intervention delivery will be assessed by recording attendance and the number of mentoring sessions completed by each participant. Digital mentors will report session attendance and completion to the project coordinator. Program completion and survey completion will also be monitored as part of the implementation evaluation.

Older adult participants will complete assessments at baseline, immediately following completion of the program, and three months after program completion to evaluate study outcomes and the sustainability of any changes.
