Tracking key trial metrics over time
The ANZCTR is an online register of clinical trials being
undertaken in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere in the world. It includes
trials across the full spectrum of therapeutic areas of pharmaceuticals,
surgical procedures, devices, public health interventions, preventive measures,
lifestyle, rehabilitation strategies and complementary therapies.
What is included?
These reports include metrics on the number of trials
registered per year, the primary sponsor of these trials, the purpose of these trials,
health conditions studied, phases of intervention for drug trials, trials by
state/territory in Australia, and number of trials started per year.
Using the data contained in the registry and data
imported from the US-based registry ClinicalTrials.gov, the ANZCTR has
developed a range of reports for both Australia and New Zealand.

The ANZCTR has also developed the following reports:
- For Australia, covering data from 2014-24:
- A report including trials registered per year, the primary sponsor of these trials, and the purpose of these trials. This report covers data from 2014-24.
- A report on health conditions studied, phases of intervention for drug trials, trials by state/territory, and number of trials started per year. This report covers data from 2021-24.
- For New Zealand, covering the period from 2014-24:
- A report including trials registered per year, the primary sponsor of these trials, and the purpose of these trials. This report covers data from 2014-24.
- A report on health conditions studied, phases of intervention for drug trials, and number of trials started per year. This report covers data from 2016-24.
Previous data indicates that by
combining data from the ANZCTR and ClinicalTrials.gov, this uses data from over
95% of studies occurring in Australia1 and 82% of studies occurring
in New Zealand2. For comprehensive national activity reports for
trials registered before 2021, these are available here.
Why is this needed?
These reports provide an objective summary of clinical
trial activity in Australia and New Zealand and are a trusted source of
information for governments, funders, industry, researchers and the public.
