Intervention/exposure
Study type
Interventional
Description of the intervention or exposure
The intervention is an 8-week group dance program based on the ‘Dance for Me’ initiative and incorporating Zumba Gold principles. Previous research using heart-rate monitoring in adults aged 40–85 years has characterised Zumba Gold as a low- to moderate-intensity form of exercise (Dalleck et al., 2017*). The program will be delivered face-to-face in a group setting by an accredited dance teacher who has completed specific training in endometriosis, pelvic pain, and safe exercise programming for this population through an Australian endometriosis support organisation (QENDO). Participants will attend one approximately 45-minute class per week for 8 consecutive weeks at the NICM Health Research Institute, Westmead, New South Wales. Classes will include a gradual warm-up, dance-based aerobic and strength movements, and a cool-down with stretching. The target intensity will be low to moderate, however movements and intensity can be modified according to participants’ symptoms, ability, and exercise tolerance. Attendance will be recorded at each session to monitor adherence, with adherence defined as attendance at a minimum of 6 of the 8 classes.

*Dalleck, L. C., Roos, K. A., Byrd, B. R., & Weatherwax, R. M. (2017). IS ZUMBA GOLD® AN EFFECTIVE WORKOUT FOR MIDDLE-AGED AND OLDER ADULTS?. Age (years), 63(8.7), 64-0.
