Intervention/exposure
Study type
Interventional
Description of intervention(s) / exposure
The intervention involves communicating information prior to IV cannula insertion without using words with emotional negative content such as "sharp", "hurt" "sting". Ie. "I am about to insert the drip".

The intervention will be administered within 5 minutes of the IV cannulation.
Intervention code [1] 753 0
Prevention
Comparator / control treatment
Control communication uses typical language currently used prior to insertion of IV cannula ie "I am about to insert the drip which is sharp and will sting a bit".

The control will be administered within 5 minutes of the IV cannulation.
Control group
Active

Outcomes
Primary outcome [1] 1272 0
Pain scores assessed by a verbal rating score.
Timepoint [1] 1272 0
Primary outcomes will be measured within 5 minutes of the IV cannulation
Primary outcome [2] 1273 0
Pain scores assessed by a Likert score.
Timepoint [2] 1273 0
Primary outcomes will be measured within 5 minutes of the IV cannulation
Secondary outcome [1] 2303 0
Patient movement and verbalisation.
Timepoint [1] 2303 0

Allocation to intervention
Randomised controlled trial
Procedure for enrolling a subject and allocating the treatment (allocation concealment procedures)
Allocation concealment will be achieved using sequentially numbered opaque sealed envelopes (prepared independently from the research team) that are opened just prior to administering the intervention
Methods used to generate the sequence in which subjects will be randomised (sequence generation)
Computer generated random numbers in blocks prepared by the Department of Biomedical statistics at our institution
Masking / blinding
Blinded (masking used)
Who is / are masked / blinded?
