Intervention/exposure
Study type
Interventional
Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Participants are randomised a warmup condition and follow along to a prerecorded video demonstrating the exercises. This ensures a standardised time for each stretch. A researcher, not involved in the data analysis is in the room while they complete the intervention. This is a minimum of 24 hours between interventions.

Static stretch warmup: Participant will perform 5 minutes of cardiovascular warmups (Marching, Jogging, Star jumps, Side gallops, Butt kicks, Mountain climbers, Vertical jumps, Alternating lunges, Burpees, jogging) before 10 minutes of static stretching (holding each stretch for 30s). The static stretches are 1. Oblique stretch, left and right
2. External rotated deep squat
3. Side stretch to left
4. Side stretch to right
5. Right leg lunge
6. Right leg quad/lunge
7. Left leg lunge
8. Left leg quad/lunge
9. Downward dog
10. Touch toes
11. Right leg split
12. Left leg split
13. Straddle
14. Left glute stretch
15. Right glute stretch
16. Back stretch

Dynamic stretch warmup: Participant will perform 5 minutes of cardiovascular warmups (Marching, Jogging, Star jumps, Side gallops, Butt kicks, Mountain climbers, Vertical jumps, Alternating lunges, Burpees, jogging) before 10 minutes of dynamic stretching. Each of the same muscles as the static stretch intervention but the demonstration involves moving through joint range of motion only holding each stretch briefly.

Summary
Brief summary
Traditionally, many dancers and instructors use light aerobic activity combined with static stretching as a warm-up. There is limited research investigating how a warm-up affects dance performance, particularly for range of motion, jump height, force production and muscle activation for unilateral jumps and dance specific skills. The aim of this research is to compare a dynamic warm-up to a traditional dance warm-up and determine how this affects dance performance. Participants will each complete 3 separate days of testing, each one beginning with warm-up that includes either static stretching, dynamic stretching and no stretching (control). It is hypothesised that dancers will demonstrate superior performance when a dynamic warm-up is used compared to a traditional dance warm-up. The outcomes will be valuable as it will allows dancer and dance instructors to implement more evidence-based training to produce optimal results.
