The sample size of 200 participants is based on a previous study of illnesses labeled ‘urate crystal arthritis’ or gout’, this sample size allowed detection of an at least 2 point difference in the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire items with power of 0.9 and alpha of 0.05. No adjustment will be made for multiple testing.
Demographic differences between the two groups will be explored with independent sample t tests and chi-square tests. The primary endpoint will be illness perception as measured by the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire. Differences between the groups in illness perceptions, causes and management strategies will be tested with independent sample t tests.
