Intervention/exposure
Study type
Interventional
Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Sixteen bi-weekly workshops of half an hour each, across an eight week period. Fifty percent of the presented material is from Positive Psychology and the other fifty percent from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The workshops are presented face-to-face with a facilitor. Presented material will be supported by group discussions, videos and internet-based exercises. Workshops will take place during students health classes. Classroom teachers will be present but will not aid in program delivery.

Material presented from Positive Psychology will be based on developing Hope, Mindfulness, and Meaning. The Acceptance and Commitment Training material will include Values, Accepting Negative Emotions and Thoughts, and Committed Action.

Students will complete questionnaires regarding their wellbeing and mental health before the workshops, at the end of the workshops, and 6-months and at 12-months follow-ups. As part of the follow-up assessments, students will be asked to report on the extent that they have utilised the strategies presented during the workshops.

Allocation to intervention
Randomised controlled trial
Procedure for enrolling a subject and allocating the treatment (allocation concealment procedures)
Students will be randomly allocated by classes (between 20 and 25 per class) to either the control or experimental condition. Allocation will be blocked by year, ensuring equal numbers of year 10 and year 11 students in each condition. Participants and experimenters will be aware of which group receives the experimental condition (i.e. no blinding will occur).
Methods used to generate the sequence in which subjects will be randomised (sequence generation)
Excel random number generator will be used for randomisation.
Masking / blinding
Open (masking not used)

Efficacy
Statistical methods / analysis
A series of MANOVAs will examine the effectiveness of the program.

Power analyses using G-Power were conducted to estimate the sample size needed to detect changes. Using a MANOVA to analysis results, an alpha level of 0.05, and a power level of 0.8, a sample size of 330 is required to detect a .25 effect size.
