Key inclusion criteria
* locally advanced or recurrent rectal cancer
* suitable for radical surgery but at high risk of positive resection margins,
* no evidence of metastasis,
* age greater than 18 years,
* histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma,
* ECOG performance status <2.
* Informed consent
