diabetes education was provided on 3 occasions over 3 months and involved insulin initiation and review, titration and followup
insulin initiation and titration was by a standard local protocol provided in consultation with each patient's GP based on BSL diary entries
basal insulin was commenced at 10 units and titrated by 2 units every 3 days until the fasting BSL was <7
