Please note the ANZCTR will be unattended from Friday 20 December 2024 for the holidays. The Registry will re-open on Tuesday 7 January 2025. Submissions and updates will not be processed during that time.

Registering a new trial?

To achieve prospective registration, we recommend submitting your trial for registration at the same time as ethics submission.

The safety and scientific validity of this study is the responsibility of the study sponsor and investigators. Listing a study does not mean it has been endorsed by the ANZCTR. Before participating in a study, talk to your health care provider and refer to this information for consumers

Effect of external rotation of the leg on the size and accesssibility of the femoral vein
Scientific title
The effect of external rotation of the leg versus a neutral leg position on femoral vein diameter and degree of overlap by the femoral artery in stable patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED).

Description of intervention(s) / exposure
For each patient, the femoral vessels will be visualised using a vascular ultrasound probe with the leg in the neutral position and then with the leg externally rotated. Measurements will be made only once with the leg in each of these positions. This procedure will take approximately 10 minutes

Outcomes
Primary outcome [1] 253277 0
Diameter of femoral vein in each position.
Measurements will be made in real time. That is, the size and overlap over the vessels will be measured as soon as the leg has been placed in the selected position. The process of obtaining the ultrasound image takes 1-2 minutes but once the image is obtained, the measurements are made immediately on the frozen image.
Timepoint [1] 253277 0
Immediately upon obtaining a clear image of the femoral vein and artery
Secondary outcome [1] 262273 0
Proportion of overlap by femoral artery in each leg position. Both a) the total diameter of the vein and b) the diameter of the vein lying medial to the artery (ie not overlapped by the femoral artery) are measured in millimetres. The proportion of overlap is 1- (b/a).
Timepoint [1] 262273 0
Immediate - as above, the measurement is taken as soon as a clear image is obtained.
